THERMOSTAT/OVERHEATING
Perhaps the most common issue we see in many S4 models is engine overheating. S4 engines can overheat due to a few issues, but this particular model has two components which are more likely to fail. The first is the thermostat which controls the level of the coolant flowing into the engine. S4 thermostats sometimes fail, which can cause overheating. Another issue we see with S4’s has to do with their water pumps. These water pumps fail due to lower-quality plastic parts, and when they do the vehicle will begin to overheat.
TIMING CHAIN ISSUES
Another engine problem we see in the S4, and some other Audi models, is an issue with the timing chain where it loses tension. In some models, the S4 timing chain can become looser than intended. When this happens, the engine can start “skipping” its intended firing sequences, losing power, and running rough. If left unchecked, this issue can lead to major mechanical failure.
CLUTCH OR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS
Most modern S4 models offer a 6-speed transmission, and over time these cars can experience shifting issues, especially when they are driven hard. Transmission issues can present themselves in many different ways, but if your S4 is experiencing a decline in performance, poor gas mileage, or difficulty switching gears, it’s best to have the car checked out by a trained professional as soon as possible.
